Kerala’s achievements ‘upsetting’ some, CM responds to Union Health Minister
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan responded to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan who criticized Kerala’s Covid prevention measures.
Instead of being proud of Kerala over the reduced mortality rate, some people are upset over the state’s achievements. Such persons are in the forefront to defame the state, CM said during his press meet on Monday.
Harsh Vardhan on Sunday had attributed to the worsening Covid-19 situation in Kerala to the state government's ‘gross negligence’ during the recent Onam festivities.
Kerala was honoured at international level as the state was successful in bringing down the Covid death rate. The state hadn’t applied for any award or honour. It came to us realising over sincere efforts in saving lives of people. It is surprising that people are upset instead of being proud, Pinarayi Vijayan added.
“It is very wrong to say that many relaxations were allowed during Onam festival. Only very little relaxations were allowed. Police were deployed to control the crowd. No public celebration was allowed. Instruction was given to strictly follow the Covid protocol. The number of cases registered and arrests made and vehicles seized by police in violating Covid protocol during those days prove how the state handled it,” CM further stated.
CM blamed many of the unnecessary protests in the state in contributing to the super spread of Covid.
He also said that even now, the situation can be brought under control if everyone stands united and put in effort for the same.
On Sunday, Harsh Vardhan had stated "Kerala is paying the price of its gross negligence. There were huge congregations during Onam and adequate safety measures were not taken. Epidemic curve of Kerala changed completely due to Onam festivities across the state... the daily new cases nearly doubled," he had said.
Noting that state-wise unlocking of services, along with an increase in intra- and inter-state travel for trade and tourism, led to the spreading of Covid-19 cases across various districts of Kerala, Harsh Vardhan had stressed that this ought to serve as a good lesson for all the state governments which were being negligent in planning for the festival season.
