Kerala reports record high 1,564 Covid-19 cases on Thursday


It is for the first time that over 1,500 coronavirus cases have been reported in Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala reported 1,564 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, said Health Minister K. K. Shailaja.

This is the highest number of COVID-19 cases reported in the state in one day. It is also for the first time that over 1,500 cases have been reported in Kerala.

Three Covid deaths were also confirmed in the state. The deceased were identified as Thiruvananthapuram Mukkola native Lissy Sajan (55), who died on August 7, Kozhikode Ramanattukara native Radhakrishnan (80), who died on August 8 and Malappuram native Abdul Rahman (63), who died on August 10.

The district-wise data of positive cases are as follows:

Thiruvananthapuram – 434, Palakkad – 202, Malappura – 202, Ernakulam – 115, Kozhikode – 98, Kasaragod – 79, Pathanamthitta – 75, Thrissur – 75, Kollam – 74, Alappuzha – 72, Kottayam – 53, Idukki – 31, Kannur -27 and Wayanad – 27.

Among the new cases, 1,380 contracted the virus through contact. The Infection source of 98 patients is unknown. 60 persons had returned from abroad while 100 persons from other states.

The district-wise data of contract (local infection) cases are as follows:

Thiruvananthapuram – 428, Malappuram – 180, Palakkad – 159, Ernakulam – 109, Kozhikode – 83, Thrissur – 73, Kasaragod – 71, Kollam – 64, Alappuzha – 59, Pathanamthitta – 44, Kottayam – 43, Wayanad – 27, Kollam – 21 and Idukki – 19.

15 health workers also tested positive for Covid-19. Among them 5 are from Thiruvananthapuram, 4 are from Malappuram, 2 each are from Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode while 1 each is from Kannur and Kasaragod. Moreover, five ITBP personnel in Alappuzha and four INHS workers in Ernakulam also tested positive for the virus.

766 recoveries were also reported on Thursday. The district-wise data of recoveries are as follows:

Thiruvananthapuram – 197, Ernakulam – 109, Kollam – 73, Alappuzha – 70, Palakkad – 67, Malappuram – 61, Thrissur – 47, Wayanad – 30, Kasaragod – 28, Kannur – 25, Idukki – 22, Kottayam – 17, Kozhikode – 12 and Pathanamthitta – 8.

There are 13,839 active coronavirus cases in Kerala while 25,694 have recovered. As many as 1,53,061 are under observation. Among them, 1,40,378 are in home/institutional quarantine while 12,683 are in hospitals. 1,670 were admitted to hospitals on Thursday.

31,270 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. So far, 10,87,722 samples were sent for testing. Among them, the results of 5,999 are awaited. 1,43,085 samples were collected from priority groups as part of sentinel surveillance. The results of 1,193 among them are awaited.

16 new hotspots were identified in Kerala on Thursday.
