Kerala reports 19 more Omicron cases, tally jumps to 57


Thiruvananthapuram: With 19 more people testing positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Kerala, the total number of infections by the new variant in the State reached 57, the Health Department said on Sunday.

Of the 19 cases, 11 were detected in Ernakulam, six in Thiruvananthapuram and one each in Thrissur and Kannur.

The department advised everyone to be extra vigilant in view of the rise in Omicron cases in the State.

Out of the 11 cases in Ernakulam, three patients were returned from the UK, two each from UAE and Ireland and one each from Spain, Canada, Qatar and Netherland.

Among the 6 Omicron patients in Thiruvananthapuram, three were returned from UK, Ghana and Qatar. The other three were infected with the virus through contact.

The Thrissur native landed in Kerala from UAE. In Kannur, the patient who tested positive for Omicron returned from Sharjah.
Health Minister Veena George appealed to the public to strictly exercise COVID preventive measures in view of the surge in Omicron cases.

“Everyone must wear a mask properly and follow social distance norms. All are requested to take the vaccine immediately. Those who are returning from foreign countries must follow quarantine rules. People from other states are also requested to take precautionary measures. Those who develop any symptoms must contact health workers as soon as possible,” said the health minister.
