Idukki: Three spillway shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam were opened at 12.30 pm on Friday following the heavy rain in its catchment area. The shutters were raised by 30 centimetres letting 534 cubic feet of water flow out of the dam. The water level in the dam neared the maximum storage capacity of 137.50 feet.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart, Stalin, to issue an alert at least 24 hours before opening the shutters of the dam. It has been instructed to release more water compared to the water inflow into the dam
The people residing on the banks of the Periyar were requested to be cautious.
Minister Roshy Augustine said that the Idukki dam will be opened only if necessary though the water level is rising. All necessary precautions were taken by the department, added the minister.
