Idukki: An orange alert was issued in the Idamalayar dam after the water level rose significantly due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area. It is learned that a red alert could be declared if the situation remains the same.
Currently, the water level in the Idamalayar dam is at 162 meters. Meanwhile, the water level in the Idukki dam remains at 2384.04 feet. Idukki district authority has decided to open the Cheruthoni Dam of the Idukki reservoir at 10 am on Sunday.
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), which manages the dam, has issued a red alert as the water level increased to 2,383.30 feet on Saturday. It also said that there was moderate rain in the catchment area.
"Under current circumstances, there is no need to worry. The water that will reach Periyar from Idukki Dam can be easily accommodated as the tributaries have been cleaned under 'Operation Vahini.' Necessary steps have been taken to shift people from the banks of Periyar. There is no need for any concern," Rajeev told the media.
