Auto rickshaw and jeep washed away in flash flood
Thenmala (Kollam): Widespread damages were reported in the aftermath of landslide at Edapalayam in Kollam district. Three vehicles were swept away with the gushing waters and many houses submerged in the flood. Transport was disrupted for more than 30 minute as dirt and stones fell over the highway road.
With the heavy rainfall in Edapalayam, landslides were recorded at three locations including Arumurikkada 4 cent colony, Aashraya 3 cent colony and a hill near the forest quarters.
A jeep that was washed away in the flash flood at Arumurikkada, got stuck on an electric pole and did not fall into Kazhuthurutty river. Flood water has entered into most of the houses here. The water gushed from the Shenthuruni forest located near the colony. The otherside of the forest is the catchment area of Parappar river.
Shaji, who lives in Ashraya colony, lost his auto rickshaw in the flash flood. The auto was later found half kilometre away in Kazhuthurutty river. A car that had been washed away in water was saved by towing it with a rope near the forest quarters.
Transport has been hindered completely near Edapalayam church, forest quarters and Anakuthivalavu. Rescue operations and cleaning are progressing with the help of natives. Another hill in Edapalayam was hit by a landslide in 1992. Hence, the natives are alarmed of another similar event in this hill.
