Kerala police to enforce helmet, seat belts for rear seat passengers
Thiruvananthapuram: Following a Supreme Court order, DGP Loknath Behera has directed Kerala police officials to ensure that pillion riders on two wheelers wear helmets and rear seat passengers in cars wear seat belts.
The DGP has issued an order to intensify vehicle checks to strictly enforce the rules.
According to central government laws, it is mandatory for pillion riders on two wheelers to wear helmets and rear seat passengers in cars to wear seat belts. Though the law has been strictly enforced in other states, Kerala has been lenient in this regard.
A committee constituted by the apex court had directed to strictly enforce the union government norms to reduce road accidents.
Earlier, transport secretary K. R. Jyothilal had written letters to the DGP and Transport Commissioner seeking to intensify vehicle checks to enforce the law. DGP Loknath Behera issued the present order following this letter.
