Thiruvananthapuram: A shocking rise had been recorded in the number of POCSO cases reported in the state during the period of Covid 19 induced lockdown. A steep hike of over 1000 cases was recorded within 2 years, marking the highest number of registered cases under the POCSO category.

As many as 3,056 POCSO cases were recorded in Kerala in 2020. This figure rose to 3,559 and 4,586 cases in 2021 and 2022, respectively. As per the reports, 46 minor girls raped during the lockdown became pregnant. 23 of them underwent delivery.

An appalling hike in the number of sexual assaults against the children was reported during a period they were spending round the clock in their own homes. The reports suggest that the safety of children is at stake even with the families.
