Idukki: The water level of the Mullaperiyar dam touched 141.40 ft on Tuesday. It is the highest water level recorded this year. Following this, one spillway shutter was opened on Tuesday morning.

The water level in the reservoir crossed 140 ft as inflow increased following heavy rain in the catchment area on Monday. Within 24 hours, one of the dam shutters were opened. As per reports, shutter V3 was raised by 30 centimetres and 397 cumecs of water is being released from the dam.

Though the dam is opened, people who are residing close to the dam need not worry, informed the authority. But the district authority has warned the people to exercise caution.

In the present situation, Tamil Nadu can maintain the water level up to 142 ft. If heavy rain continues and the inflow to the dam increases, the water level will increase again. In view of this, one shutter was raised. If necessary, Tamil Nadu is also permitted to open more shutters. They will take further action after consulting the Idukki district authority.
