Palakkad: The Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has decided to allow vehicles with temporary registration on the roads.

As of now, the vehicles are delivered to the customer only after receiving the permanent registration number. The retail dealers will engrave the number on the high-security number plate before handing over the vehicle.

Last year, an Ernakulam native filed a petition in the Kerala High Court questioning the delay in the delivery of his vehicle. The petitioner claimed he had to wait two months due to a delay in acquiring the fancy registration number for his vehicle. Following this, the court issued an interim order to Ernakulam RTO to release the vehicle immediately to the owner. MVD also approved a temporary registration number for the vehicle.

At the same time, many dealers are reluctant to deliver vehicles using temporary registration numbers due to legal hurdles. As per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, the union government hold the right to issue temporary registration numbers.

A temporary registration will be issued if a vehicle is registered outside of the state of purchase or if it requires work on its body. Further, the union government is against the issue of temporary registration numbers if it is to be registered in the state from where it was originally bought. However, temporary registration numbers are mandatory in Kerala for permanent registration. To overcome this, there is a need to amend the state MVD Act," informed the Transport Commissioner's Office in Thiruvananthapuram.

Meanwhile, an MVD official said that RTOs in the state has been informed about the use of temporary registration numbers for vehicles.
