Kerala likely to conduct LSG polls in December
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government is planning to conduct the Local Self-Government elections in December after examining COVID-19 situation. It is learned that a final decision will be taken within two weeks.
The government and Election Commission are not interested to extend the polls from December.
If the COVID-19 spread would not turn more critical, the LSG polls will be conducted in December itself.
Earlier, all parties except BJP requested the Election Commission to extend the polls because of the pandemic, during the all-party meeting summoned by government and Election Commission. Even after approving the government’s demand and recommendation of the all-party meeting, the commission took a strong stance declaring that the polls should not be extended indefinitely.
The Election Commission has also started arrangements to conduct the polls. At present, the inspection of the voting machines is under progress. Drawing of lots for reservation wards was also completed. The EC has prepared guidelines to conduct the polls as per the health department order.
Following the selection of reservation wards, political parties are eyeing at the reservation on president post.
Meanwhile, the government has issued an order fixing the reservation on president post in grama pachayats, block panchayats, district panchayats, municipalities and corporations.
As per this, the reservation of president post for each district will be determined. The Election Commission will decide on president post reservation by the end of October.
