New Delhi: The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing into a batch of petitions over the Mullaperiyar dam issue. The apex court decided to adjourn the hearing on Kerala’s request. Kerala was asked to give a reply to the affidavit submitted by Tamil Nadu over the case. On Saturday, Kerala requested more time to submit the reply as citing that they received the details of Tamil Nadu’s affidavit on Friday night.
Adv Jaideep Gupta who appeared for Kerala also informed the court that the government has directed officials to submit the details related to the case within 24 hours. Kerala will prepare a detailed reply to Tamil Nadu’s affidavit based on the details submitted by the officials.
Kerala requested Supreme Court to postpone the hearing to next week. As Tamil Nadu didn’t oppose the demand, SC will consider the case on November 22.
A bench headed by justice Khanwilkar asserted that the interim order issued on October 28 will be in force until the next hearing. As per this order, water in the Mullaperiyar dam has to be maintained as per the decision of the supervisory committee. The supervisory committee had directed that the maximum water level of the dam should not exceed 141 ft.
Tamil Nadu government has submitted the affidavit into the case on Saturday around 10 pm. In the affidavit, TN has pointed out subjects like strengthening of the baby dam, felling of trees and repair of roads. It is learnt that Kerala’s reply will be crucial in the case as well as the future of Mullaperiyar.
