Palakkad: Cheradu in Malampuzha witnessed the largest rescue operation held for rescuing an individual in the state. Indian Army, NDRF, drones, coast guard and forest officials were deployed for the 45-hour-long historic mission.
The youth named Babu who got stuck in a crevice on the hills on Monday was successfully rescued and taken to the top of the hills around 10.20 am on Wednesday.
The rescue mission was incomparable. A huge team of rescue operators was engaged to save the youth. Teams have been mobilised overnight and rescue operations did a commendable job.
For the rescue operation in Palakkad, two Army teams have been moved on requisit from the state government.
"One team of 12 personnel from Madras Regiment Centre, Wellington, consisting of mountain qualified personnel with specialist equipment reached by road at the location at early hours on Wednesday," Army sources said.
The second team of 22 personnel from Parachute Regiment centre, Bangalore was moved by aircraft to Sulur and reached the spot by 4:00 am.
Anti-Terrorist squad and police also accompanied the NDRF team for the rescue. A drone team also deployed for updating the details of the mission on time.Mountaineers who conquered Mount Everest also included in the team.
A team of three doctors also deployed. The district authority has made all arrangements to airlift Babu from the top of the hills. Indian Navy’s Chetak helicopter was arranged for it.
As Babu was starving for more than 40 hours, he tried himself to escape from the crevice. Babu managed to move from the position where he got stuck at first. But he failed to move further as the hill was too steep.
The army men also faced a tough time to rescue Babu with the rope from the steep hills.
Babu, 23, along with three of his friends had climbed the hillock and while coming down, he slipped and fell into the fault line.
After failing to rescue him, his friends rushed downhill and alerted the locals and soon came the rescue team, but they too failed.
