Thiruvananthapuram: Individuals will get the opportunity to display their names on KSRTC buses. For this purpose, they have to sponsor the KSRTC buses converted as ‘Gramavandi’ which means rural buses. Apart from individuals, local self-governments and organisations will be allowed to be part of the project.
Announcing this project, KSRTC has invited private partnership for operating services to remote areas. The KSRTC aims to overcome the loss from operating services to remote areas by launching this project.
Procedures to ensure the cooperation of local self-governments in the project are in the final phase. A high-level committee formed for this purpose will prepare a final draft within a week. The government will allot special funds for ‘Gramavandi’ while granting project funds to panchayats. The buses under this project will start service from April.
Companies, individuals and voluntary groups are also invited to sponsor the buses. Those who need the service of ‘Gramavandi’ should pay a certain amount and sign a contract with KSRTC. The sponsor can select the route and time of the bus.
Meanwhile, KSRTC will give priority to those who have MLA’s recommendation. The amount should be paid in advance after calculating the fuel expense. Normal ticket rates will be charged from passengers. The service will be scheduled ensuring at least 150 km are covered per day. Local self-governments can jointly sponsor the service.
In a major move, KSRTC has decided to bring all unprofitable services under the Gramavandi project. Buses with 18, 24, 28 and 32 seats are considered for executing the project.
