Water level touches 141 ft, 2 shutters of Mullapperiyar dam raised

Idukki: Two shutters of Mullaperiyar dam has been raised on Thursday around 8 am after the water level reached the maximum capacity of the reservoir. As per reports, the authority raised the two shutters after the water level of the dam touched 141 ft.

As the dam opened, 772 cubic feet of water is being released into the Periyar river.

As heavy rain continues in the catchment areas, the Cheruthoni dam under Idukki reservoir was be opened again. One of the shutters was raised on Thursday around 10 am.

Kerala Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine, in his Facebook page, earlier in the morning had said that shutters of the two dams would be opened to maintain the water level there in view of heavy rains.

He said in his post that the water level in the Mullaperiyar reservoir had reached 141 feet.

Subsequently, two shutters of Mullaperiyar were opened by 40 centimetres by Tamil Nadu at 8 AM, the minister updated on his Facebook page.

Thereafter, at 10.00 AM, news channels showed the opening of the third shutter of the Cheruthoni dam.

The minister, in his post, had advised people living on both sides of the Periyar river to exercise caution.

On Wednesday night, the authority opened the Kallar dam also.

High range areas in Idukki received heavy downpour on Wednesday night. It is reported that incessant rains lashed the area till 12 am. Following this, the water level in Mullaperiyar and Idukki increased.

According to the reports, the water level in Mullaperiyar dam touched the upper rule curve of 141 feet. This upper rule curve will be in force till November 20. Later, the upper rule curve will be 142 ft.

Tamil Nadu government had alerted Kerala that the dam shutters will be raised as the water level touched 140 ft. It was on October 29, the spillway shutters of the dam were opened for the last time.
