UDF retains power in Kottayam municipality


Kottayam: UDF came back to power in Kottayam municipality by winning 22 votes against LDF. UDF candidate Bincy Sebastian sworn in as municipal chairperson.

UDF and LDF secured 22 seats in the elections. While BJP got 8 seats. UDF retained power in the municipality as one of the LDF members skipped the election of municipal chairperson due to health issues. Following this, UDF scripted history by retaining power by one vote.

UDF had lost power in Kottayam municipality after LDF moved a no-trust motion against municipal chairperson Bincy Sebastian and BJP supported it. Later, the election was held in the municipality. None of the parties gained majority in the elections.

At first, UDF won only 21 seats while LDF obtained 22 and BJP 8 seats. Bincy Sebastian who won the election as a Congress rebel from Gandhi Nagar south joined UDF. With this, the strength of UDF’s winning candidates touched 22. Finally, the elections favoured UDF and Bincy got elected as chairperson.
