Area hit by landslide
Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains triggered a mudslide at Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. It is learnt that the mudslide occurred near Sasthampara. No casualties were reported as there aren't any houses surrounding the area. However, farmlands in the area were destroyed in the mudslide.
Almost 50 families have been relocated from the area by considering the safety of the people. They were shifted to the houses of relatives and a relief camp set up in Anavoor Higher Secondary School.
Over 15 quarries are situated in the area which comes under Kunnathukal grama panchayat. The villagers are living in fear because of this. Fire force and police personnel are deployed to ensure the safety of the people. It is assumed that the heavy rains in forest ranges and the catchment areas triggered the mudslide.
The people of the Amboori Adivasi villages are isolated following the incessant rains. The water level at Neyyar dam is also rising. The farmlands in Kadukkarai, Kathipara, Chankile, and Ummancode have been submerged in water following the rise in water level in Chittar dam on the state border.
