New Delhi: The Kerala government has moved an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Kerala High Court order which nullified the 80:20 ratio for giving minority scholarships. A High Court division bench, headed by Chief Justice S Manikumar had ordered that the scholarships should be distributed on the basis of the population of the communities. The government filed the plea against this.
In the petition, the state government has pointed out that if the scholarship is distributed on the basis of population, ineligible people will be benefitted from the scholarship.
Sachar and Paloli committees have identified the backward groups within the Muslim community. Because of this, Muslims were allotted more number of scholarships. But the government didn’t hold any valid documents to prove the backwardness of the Christian community so far.
At present, a committee headed by JB Koshy has been formed to study the educational backwardness of people in the Christian community. In the petition submitted before the apex cour, the state government informed that they are ready to give scholarships based on the population after receiving the report of the JB Koshy committee.
