Kollam: An executive engineer of the Public Works Department was transferred for his 'failure' to provide updates on the construction works of buildings for various departments in the district. Induraj of the building section was transferred to the Palakkad bridges section.

The district infrastructure coordination committee met on Friday to discuss the issue. The delay in the works was discussed in the meeting attended by Minister PA Mohammed Riyas. Induraj was transferred immediately after the meeting.

The minister asked why a re-tender was not issued for a work in which the contractor was sacked in 2016. The engineer replied that the matter was sub judice. When asked if the court had issued a stay on the work and whether further action was taken to remove the stay, the engineer reportedly did not give satisfactory answers. Besides, he also did not give 'proper' answers to questions on the update of construction of various buildings.

District Collector Afsana Parveen said that the works were lagging. MLAs also brought the attention of the committee to the matter that several works started in 2016 and 2018 have not been completed yet.

After the meeting, minister Riyas immediately ordered transfer of the engineer. The meeting was attended by heads of various departments and MLAs.

The minister's office has said that four meetings per year will be held in every district to review the progress of the works of the department.
