Thiruvananthapuram: Despite having assets worth billions, Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple that struggles to meet daily expenses has been offered an interest-free loan amounting to Rs 2 crore by the state government.

The decision is based on deliberation over the letter written by the temple executive officer in May 2021, requesting the government to offer Rs 10 crore as a loan. According to the letter, the temple has been struggling to meet day to day expenses, staff salary and allied pension due to pandemic induced financial crunch. Notably, to meet such expenses, Rs 4 lakh is needed in a day. However, in spite of the Mandala season, the daily remittance is around Rs 2.5 lakh.

The loan issued has to be repaid in a year. The loan was allowed based on special consent from the finance department.
