Thiruvananthapuram: The state government’s announcement to create new posts in the health department is still only on paper. The government had earlier announced the creation of a total of new 2799 posts. However, only 932 have become a reality so far.
Of this, 632 posts are those consolidated as part of the acquisition of Pariyaram Medical College in Kannur. Whereas, the setting up of the remaining 1867 posts are yet to be a reality.
The announcement was made by the health department in 2021 as part of strengthening the health sector during the pandemic. Although those in the PSC rank list have been waiting since then, no action has been taken so far.
In addition, the rank list for lab technicians in various districts will be cancelled in March. Most of the candidates in the rank list will not be able to apply for the next notification as they would have crossed the age limits.
The order creating 2799 new posts in principle was issued on February 19, 2021. It enlisted 1200 new posts under the health directorate, 1299 under the medical education department and 300 others under the AYUSH department.
A detailed order stating the category, salary scale among others will be issued later and the department heads were supposed to take further action in this regard, said the order.
Neglect towards paramedical posts
An order stating the creation of 300 out of the 1200 posts under the health directorate was issued on August 3, 2021. The posts were categorised as: staff nurse - 204, pharmacist - 52, clerk - 42 and office attendant - 2. However, no further action was taken in the case of the remaining 900 posts.
Reportedly, no new paramedical posts namely lab technicians and lab assistants were created even though rank lists were issued for many of them. If the government fails to take action soon, then those candidates in the rank list may lose their chance of getting employed in the services.
The 1299 posts, which were to be created under the medical education department, also includes 772 posts which were set aside for the employees of Pariyaram Medical College. Of which, the posts of nurses (508) and medical teachers (124) have been consolidated too.
