Kochi: In an order that may bring a long-term impact, the Kerala High Court asked the excise department to pay compensation to victims of a 'bogus case'.
Two men from Kollam were arrested in 2006 for allegedly possessing illicit spirit. They were later acquitted by the court after finding that the case was bogus. The court has also ordered to claim the compensation amount from the officers who framed the case.
The court also asked the state to form a commission to look into the cases charged by the department in the last five years. Justice PV Kunhikrishnan ordered to submit the report in six months. He said that the officers charge anyone with bogus cases if they wish to.
Earlier, the HC had asked the police department to pay compensation for harassing a minor and her father.
