Kerala HC issues ban on strikes in schools, colleges

The court pronounced its verdict on a petition filed by two schools in Pathanamthitta.

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday issued an order banning strikes, sit-in protests, marches and gherao inside school and college campuses. The court also said that no one should be encouraged to strike or obstruct studies.

The court pronounced its verdict on a petition filed by two schools in Pathanamthitta.

A large number academic days and hours are lost because of strikes and protests, the petition said inviting immediate intervention of court into the matter. There exists a HC order banning political activities inside campuses, but it is not implemented, the petition further said.

After hearing arguments of the schools, court pronounced the verdict banning strikes and protests in schools and colleges.

Such activities are not permissible in campuses. Those should be considered as unlawful, HC observed. It also said that no student can encourage or force another student to take part in such activities.

It also said that if any student is found violating this order, strict action should be taken.
