Kerala govt to accommodate elderly abandoned in hospitals: R Bindu

Thiruvananthapuram: The Social Justice Department of the state is planning to take up rehabilitation of the elderly who have been abandoned in hospitals.

“Facilities for elderly rehabilitation will be set up in all institutions affiliated under the orphanage control board,” said Minister R Bindu.

The principal secretary of the social justice department has been assigned to formulate the blueprint for the procedures.

The directions were given by the minister in a meeting attended by the board’s office-bearers, head of the department of health and medical education and social justice department officials, in the presence of Health Minister Veena George.

Reportedly, a total of 29,767 elderly can be accommodated in the 62 old age homes directly run by the government, and 632 others affiliated under the orphanage control board.

Currently, there are 17,801 residents in these old age homes.

Meanwhile, the health department is also planning to ensure healthcare facilities and distribution of medicines for the residents.
