Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty on Wednesday informed that summer vacation following the academic year 2023-24 would start from April 1 itself. The government has also rerouted from its plan to ensure 210 academic days.

The U-turn comes at a time when various teachers’ associations have been decrying the department-pushed new academic calendar. The calendar earmarked more Saturdays and the first five days in April as academic days to ensure 210 instructional days for Classes 1 to 10. Many alleged that the new calendar was pushed unilaterally.

Meanwhile, Sivankutty maintained that the decisions have been changed due to requests from various teachers’ associations. However, he pointed out that the ‘all Saturdays are academic days’ narrative is misleading and only 13 Saturdays out of 52 Saturdays will be academic days.

Minister pointed out that the present rules and court orders demand a maximum of five academic days per week. As a result, Saturdays in those weeks without five academic days will be considered academic days.
