Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has decided to turn Karunya Health Insurance scheme into an assurance model scheme by taking charge of its implementation. With this, insurance agencies will be completely avoided from the scheme. The government will directly settle the hospital bills of beneficiaries through a state health agency.

The state government had launched the Karunya Health Insurance Scheme by merging all social health insurance projects in 2019. Under the revised scheme, a family will get insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh in a year.

As per the contract, Reliance General Insurance was the service provider. The government has decided to take complete control of the scheme after examining that the offered amount was not sufficient for various treatments.

The government has issued an order approving the recommendations of Karunya Arogya Suraksha Padhati (KASP) special officer in this regard.

As the scheme will be turned to assurance mode, the government will directly hand over the money to the hospitals. Earlier, the insurance agency handed over the money to hospitals after examining the claim.

In order to coordinate the activities, an independent state health agency will be formed. This agency will take up implementation of a comprehensive trauma care project which ensures free treatment in the initial hours to people met with road accidents.

As the scheme is linked with the central government scheme Ayushman Bharat, it will not have changes in its conditions. The health department will issue a detailed draft later.

At present, 42 lakh people have registered as beneficiaries of the Karunya Health Insurance Scheme. It is examined that the scheme will be more effective for the people as the government takes its full control.
