Kerala govt regularises timings of medical college hostels amidst controversy

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government on Wednesday mandated 9:30 PM as the final reporting time for inmates of the hostels of its medical colleges in the state. The order came hours after the high court questioned the night curfew imposed in girls’ hostels while no such restrictions are implemented in boys’ hostels. The court was considering a plea moved by the girl students at Kozhikode medical college.

The order directed the colleges to ensure that hostel gates are closed by 9:30 PM and that the security staff keep a movement register to track entry of hostelers.

Further, first-year students should produce a letter from their parents if they fail to report to the hostel before 9:30 PM. Security staff should also record their names in the movement register. Second-year students must produce ID cards before the security guard if they report after regular time. In addition, they should also sign the movement register.

Earlier, a petitioner questioned gender discrimination in ladies' hostels and argued that boys have freedom to roam outside the hostel premises after reporting time.

According to the government, the order was released after hearing the recommendations of PTAs in Medical Colleges and teaching staff.

Students of Kozhikode medical college girls' hostel had protested against the night curfew earlier.
