Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government has decided to maintain a teacher- students ratio of 1:40 for fixing vacancies to appoint high school teachers this year.

The cabinet forwarded the approval to the General Education Department to release an order regarding this, by surpassing the objections of the Finance Department.

The present teacher - students ratio for appointments in high school section is 1:45. During the previous years, the government had provided a relaxation of 1:40 ratio for the schools with comparatively lesser number of students. By this, the government could accord protection to the teachers’ posts in classes 9 and 10. The teachers’ unions raised a similar issue this year also, based on which the cabinet fixed the ratio as 1:40.
