Thiruvananthapuram: The letter sent by the Minister of Higher Education R Bindu to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan requesting to reappoint Dr Gopinath Raveendran as the vice-chancellor of Kannur University has surfaced. In the letter, the minister urged for reappointment by considering the academic excellence of the VC. The letter was sent just a day before the expiring date of his tenure as VC.
The minister also asked to halt the proceedings of the selection committee that was appointed to find a new VC.
Under the vice-chancellorship of Dr Gopinath, the university had performed well in its academic domain. The university also stood out in the NAAC accreditation, the minister wrote in the letter.
Pointing at the reappointment of Kannur VC and some other issues, The governor on December 11 said the higher education in the state has gone to dogs.
"While the school education in the state is fine, the higher education sector has gone to the dogs as even appointments are being made against the rules," said Khan while speaking to the media in Delhi.
"Since the chancellor's post is not Constitutional, I wrote to Pinarayi Vijayan to pass an Ordinance wherein the Chief Minister can take over as the chancellor," said Khan. He reiterated his stance despite the government attempts to pacify him.
