Thiruvananthapuram: Advocate General K Gopalakrishna Kurup will not appear for the Governor in the High Court on the Kannur VC reappointment case. Kurup will represent the state government and Governor may have to find another counsel for him.
The AG had given legal advice on the matter to the government. The advice was attached to the letter sent by minister R Bindu to the Chancellor - Governor Arif Mohammad Khan- seeking reappointment of Kannur VC Dr Gopinath Ravindran. The AG felt it will not be good to appear for the Governor at this juncture. Besides, the Governor had written to the government stating that AG's advice was 'illegal'. Kurup had advised the government that Dr Ravindran can be reappointed.
Earlier, the HC single bench had dismissed the plea seeking cancellation of the reappointment. The petition was filed by university senate member Dr Premachandran Keezhoth and academic council member Shino P Jose. A division bench presided by the chief justice will hear the appeal. AG had refused to accept the HC notice to the Governor on the appeal.
Governors have earlier also sought legal help on their own. It is not unusual, opines legal fraternity.
