Kozhikode: One acre of Chaliyam has been decided to incorporate in the ‘Nagaravanam’ project’ initiated with central assistance. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has assured to offer financial aid for the project. The decision was taken at the meeting convened by the forest principal secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha with the officials on Friday. It is learned that Kerala may obtain permission for the Rs 10 crore project from the ministry soon.
‘Nagaravanam’ project aims for afforestation in certain urban areas. The land near Chaliyam forest depot has been selected for the project. Over 400 rare species of plants mentioned in ‘Hortus Malabaricus’ had been planted in the 2.2 hectares of land here in 2011.The new project will be executed in the area adjacent to this land.
The project will be taken up in cooperation with the tourism department. Some of the land areas proposed for the project have been encroached by people as the land was earlier abandoned by the government. Some plots are also used for fishing-related activities without permission from the concerned department.
It is also considering to bring the land under the control of the forest department. The ‘Nagaravanam’ project has been planned to execute in 8 locations as a solution to the surging air pollution in the cities. The centre has also assured assistance to the ‘Vidyavanam’ project that is being implemented in the campuses.
