Pamba, Idamalayar dams opened; high alert sounded in Periyar basin

Ernakulam: Two shutters of Idamalayar dam opened at 6 am on Tuesday. The shutters that have been raised by 80 centimetres now. It will be lifted again after the water reaches Bhoothathankettu and analysing the situation. The water from the Idamalayar dam is expected to reach here around 8 am. By 12 pm, water will reach Kalady- Aluva regions.

The dams are being opened gradually considering the capacity of the dams and rivers considering the possibility of rainfall, said PN Biju, Executive Engineer.

Shutters of Pamba dam were also opened today at 5 am. Two shutters were raised by 30 centimetres and 50,000 litres of water is being released per second here. Thereby, excess water started to reach Pamba river. The water level in Pamba river may rise 10 centimetres with this.

Shutters of Idukki dam will be opened by 11 am and two shutters of Cheruthoni dam will be lifted by 50 cm each. ​A high alert has been sounded in the Periyar basin and people living on the banks of Periyar in the downstream areas of Cheruthoni dam have been cautioned.
