Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala cabinet on Wednesday approved the suggestion of the Electricity Board to seek Rs 12,131 crore from the union government's project for modernising the electricity distribution.
Out of this, Rs 8,200 crore will be spent on installing pre-paid metres in all households.
The state is aiming to completely shift to smart metres by 2025. With this, the users will have to pay before consumption.
The plan devised by the Board was approved by a committee headed by the Chief Secretary. With the approval of the government, the proposal can now be forwarded for the consideration of the union government.
