Kerala bypolls: UDF wins 3, LDF 2, climb down of vote share for BJP
Thiruvananthapuram: As the counting of votes in the by-election to five assembly constituencies ended, LDF conquered two sitting seats of UDF in Vattiyoorkavu and Konni whereas UDF retained its seats in Ernakulam and Manjeswaram. LDF lost its sitting seat in Aroor to UDF.
Meanwhile, the BJP faced a major setback in the bypolls to the five constituencies. In Vattiyoorkavu and Konni, where it had expected victory, the party couldn’t even secure the second spot. Not only this, it lost votes in four of the five constituencies where bypolls were held.
Only in Manjeswaram could BJP reach the second spot but there too the saffron party only increased its share by mere 348 votes.
Even after using the Sabarimala women entry issue as their star campaign subject, the party couldn’t perform well.
In a historic win in Aroor, UDF’s Shanimol Usman broke through the LDF bastion to reach the Assembly. Shanimol won by 1,921 votes.
UDF candidate T. J. Vinod managed to retain the seat in Ernakulam the despite unfavourable political atmosphere. His victory has been declared with a margin of 3,673 votes. Hibi Eden of UDF had won the seat for a margin of 21,949 votes in the previous election. Compared to the two previous elections, there is a considerable decline in the votes earned by the UDF.
LDF candidate in Vattiyoorkavu V. K. Prasanth has won by more than 14,251 votes. Prasanth was leading over UDF candidate K Mohan Kumar and NDA candidate S Suresh right from the initial stage of counting. An LDF victory in Vattiyoorkavu could turn to be a major boost for Left cadres in the constituency and a heavy blow to the UDF faction as it was UDF's sitting seat.
K. U. Janeesh Kumar of the LDF has secured victory in the Konni bypolls by a margin of 9,953 votes. Janeesh Kumar’s victory marks the grand comeback of LDF to the constituency after a gap of 23 years. Janeesh Kumar emerged victorious after securing a comfortable lead over UDF’s P Mohan Raj and NDA’s K Surendran.
In Manjeswaram, UDF candidate M. C. Kamarudeen won by 7,923 votes. BJP candidate Raveesha Tantri Kundar is in the second place while LDF candidate Sankar Rai is trailing behind in the third spot.
