Kerala bracing ahead for scorching heat; El Nino likely to influence rainfall
Kochi: Kerala is burning in the scorching summer. The news of sunstroke and sunburn is reported everywhere. The meteorological department has warned of intense heat to continue in the coming days.
The temperature may rise upto 3-4 degree Celsius more than normal. High alert has been issued in view of the chances of sunburn. Though it is the time for summer rain, Kerala received only isolated rainfall in some places. There are concerns about the monsoon which is supposed to commence in June.
The availability of rain in the state is based on the El Nino effect, said Dr. M. G. Manoj, scientist at the atmospheric radar research centre of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). He added that there is 70 percent chance for El Nino effect here considering the present conditions.
El Nino is being formed in the Pacific Ocean and is likely to affect the monsoon. The influence of El Nino is mostly experienced during the months of August and September. The normal rain expected in the period of June - September is 89 cm in the country. If the rain is 10 percent lower than this, it is considered as drought.
In Kerala, about 200-210 cm rain is received during monsoon. But all these figures may change due to El Nino effect. El Nino causes immense changes in the climate all over the world. The amount and availability of rain will be influenced by the effect such as decline of rain in areas where heavy rain is normal and vice versa.
El Nino is caused by the escalating heat of seawater close to the equator in the Pacific Ocean. The temperature may rise upto 2-5 degree Celsius. El Nino is formed in the tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean in a gap of 2-7 years.
Normally, the wind direction is from east to west as a result of the Earth’s rotation. The heat is accumulated in the sea surface due to El Nino effect and it will heat up the atmosphere. This influences the atmospheric pressure and change the wind direction.
Peru is one of the first countries affected by El Nino effect. India, Indonesia and Australia also are affected by the phenomenon.
