Kollam: “We were really shocked as we could not understand what was happening. They all were youngsters and I hope they will mend their ways. We are not angry at them as we have learned to forgive them,” said Danial (42), a Moscow based man who is on a visit to Kerala with his girlfriend Kate (26).
On Republic Day, while they were doing kayaking on Thanni Lake in Kollam along with a couple from Delhi, they were attacked by a mob of 12 young people. Scared of the incident, the Delhi couple left the place abruptly. For Danial and Kate, the incident was shocking and they are yet to recover from it.
Paravur police have arrested three people in connection with the incident.
Speaking to mathrubhumi.com at a resort in Thanni, Danial and Kate narrated the incident.
“It was on January 6 we reached Kerala. After visiting Kochi and Munnar, we came to Varkala a few days back. We heard about kayaking in Kollam backwaters and reached Thanni on January 25 to experience it. In Thanni, a couple from Delhi joined us and we were together doing kayaking on Thanni Lake. We had our trainer as well with us. All of a sudden, a mob of some 12 young people of age approximately 23 to 26 started making noise from the banks of the river. A few among them started swimming in the water and they reached close to us. They behaved rudely to us and became very aggressive. I told my kayaking trainer to stay away from the place and we reached near Maniyamkulam Bridge. A few among the guys were waiting for us on the bridge and they threw a big stone towards us. Following this, we got panic and informed the police. By the time police came they all had escaped.
We have no clue about what had happened and the trainer was saying something in Malayalam to them. That night, we could not sleep as the incident was horrible. But we are not angry at them as I am sure that they will correct themselves. We forgive them,” said Danial.
Till the end of this month, Danial and Kate will be in Kerala and they say in one voice that the state is really beautiful and the people are very helpful. The environment here is very peaceful and this incident will not prevent us from coming back to Kerala again.
Kate and Danial have a complaint as well. “Why people here eat very much spicy food as is not good for our stomach. The food here is very nice; so to enjoy it, we tell the cook to make it less spicy in advance.
Even though Danial visited India nine times, this is the first time he visits Kerala. On the other hand, this is Kate’s first visit to India.
In the meantime, Paravur police have arrested three in connection with the case on the complaint registered by the kayaking trainer, Dani Gorgon. “Only three in the gang were involved in the crime. A case has been registered against them under section 307 of IPC for attempt to murder,” said police.
He also said that the accused were under the influence of alcohol. The arrested have been identified as Paravur natives Sarath (27), Sreeraj (26) and Prasanth (25).
