Mudslide disrupts rail traffic on Konkan route

Mudslip on Kulashekar tunnel

Mangaluru: Train service in the stretch of Konkan route were affected following a mudslide on Friday morning. According to reports, the mudslide occurred near the Kulashekar tunnel situated between Mangaluru junction and Thokur.

Railway electric line and the safety wall near the track were damaged. This track comes under Palakkad division of the Southern Railway.

The officials reported that the rail traffic will be restored after removing the mud. The rail traffic is expected to be restored by Saturday.

All trains on the Konkan route will be affected till the mud is removed from the tracks, railway sources said.

Mangaluru-Thokur section falls under the Southern Railway and Konkan Railway starts from Thokur.

The railways had constructed a retainer wall near the track, but the landslip was massive and the mud fell on the tracks.

Railway workforce have started clearing the tracks.

Heavy rains in the last few days in the region have caused the landslip, the sources said.
