Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rain and gusty wind lashed central and north Kerala on Tuesday. Many places reported widespread destruction.
As gusty wind battered Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki districts in the wee hours of Tuesday, trees were uprooted and houses damaged. Meanwhile, no casualities were reported so far.
According to India Meterological Department forecast, Kerala will receive heavy rain till Sunday.
Strong winds with speed reaching 45-65 kmph is likely over Kerala and people residing in hilly areas must stay vigilant, alerted IMD.
Three days back, a low pressure system was formed over Bay of Bengal. With this, monsoon winds intensified in Arabian sea.
Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki districts will receive heavy rain within next 3 hours, informed IMD.
Heavy rain is continuing in Idukki.Three houses were damaged at Thodupuzha after strong winds battered the area around 4 am. Many trees were uprooted and crops damaged.
In Kottayam district, rain caused severe damage in Methiri. Over 6 houses collapsed in the natural calamity. Power lines were disrupted in many regions in the district.
Ernakulam district reported more destructions due to the wind. The heavy rain battered the district in the wee hours of Tuesday. Paravur Thathappilly, Vyppin and Mazhavannur reported widespread destructions. Many houses partially collapsed.
