Thiruvananthapuram: Uncertainty looms over the reopening of liquor outlets in the state. It is learned that there is a difference of opinion between officials over allowing liquor booking via the BevQ app.
Excise minister MV Govindan will discuss the matter with Excise and Beverages Corporation (BevCo) representatives on Wednesday.
The government aims to reopen the liquor outlets from Thursday as part of the lockdown relaxations. But a final decision was not taken on the arrangements for the operation of liquor outlets.
The government is confused whether the police force should be deployed to control rush in the outlets or BevQ app should be relaunched for hassle-free sale.
It is reported that the BevQ app, which was used during the lockdown last year, is likely to be re-launched for online booking of liquor. It is examined that more time is needed to make a new mobile app.
Hence, BevCo has decided to relaunch BevQ by fixing the technical glitches. But the excise department opined that the app should be removed as it triggered many problems last year.
Excise has observed that there will not be rush to purchase liquor if more outlets are opened. Hence, the department decided to deploy police for controlling the rush. A final decision will be taken only after the meeting on Wednesday.
