Thiruvananthapuram: BJP state president K Surendran alleged that Muttil tree felling resulted as part of CPI’s plan to raise funds for election campaign. The BJP leader also questioned the government’s explanation over the order to cut the trees.

“If it was a move to help the farmers, why did the government stop it midway? Even CPI confessed that tree felling was a political decision. So, the tree felling must be part of a conspiracy,” he alleged.

Attacking CPI and CPM, he added that both parties are not ready to give an explanation to the public.

The BJP leader also criticised that the whole investigation is a drama.

“If a serious probe is carried out, many officials will be booked. The trees were smuggled with the support of home department and police. At present, we have to produce an affidavit even for purchasing vegetables. So, I wonder how a lorry carrying trees worth crores managed to reach Ernakulam,” said Surendran.

The BJP leader demanded an investigation to find out how the money generated from tree smuggling was utilised.

He also criticised that CPI and CPM allotted forest department to NCP being aware of the tree felling case.
