Kasaragod: The state has received the highest summer rain in this season. As per the official data, usually, the state receives 361.5 mm rainfall from March 1 to May 31. But this time, the state received a record rainfall of 750.9 mm.
In 2004, the state recorded 741.8 mm rainfall which was the highest amount of summer rain. But the summer rain this year broke this record.
In 2020, the state received 386.4 mm (7 pc excess) rainfall. Meanwhile, the summer rain was recorded at 169.6 mm and 521.8 mm in 2019 and 2018 respectively.
As per the data issued by India Meteorological Department, the summer rain season in Kerala concluded with 108 percent excess rainfall.
In 2021, the state marked the best ever summer rainfall within 60 years. It is the fifth-best summer rain in the state. Rainfall of 915.2 mm received in 1933 is the highest-ever summer rain in the state.
The highest summer rain recorded in the state in the previous years are as follows: 1960 - 791 mm, 1932 - 788 mm, 1918 - 767 mm.
This year, all districts especially southern districts received excessive summer rain. Pathanamthitta recorded the highest summer rain with 1342.6 mm while Palakkad district recorded the lowest summer rain in 2021 with 440.9 mm.
The India Meteorological Department informed that the monsoon will intensify in Kerala by Thursday.
“The stare received record summer rain due to the influence of the continuous cyclones. Tautae formed in the Arabian Sea and Yaas formed in Bay of Bengal resulted in 362.9 mm rainfall in Kerala. 268 mm rainfall recorded in the state from May 13 to 16 as influenced by cyclone Tautae. The state recorded 94.9 mm rain on May 25-26 due to cyclone Yaas," said meteorologist Rajeevan Erikulam.
