MB Rajesh becomes Kerala Assembly speaker

Thiruvananthapuram: Thrithala MLA MB Rajesh was elected as the speaker of the 16th Kerala legislative assembly on Tuesday. LDF candidate MB Rajesh defeated UDF candidate PC Vishnunath by 96 votes. The UDF candidate secured 40 votes.

A total of 136 members participated in the election.

Three members from LDF and one from the opposition failed to report to the assembly for the election.

After announcing MB Rajesh as the winning candidate of speaker election, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and opposition leader VD Satheesan welcomed him to the speaker’s dais.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was the first one to cast vote in the election presided by pro term speaker.

The assembly will disperse after the election and will convene again on May 28 for the governor’s policy address.
