Kozhikode: UDF faced this assembly polls mustering all courage to prove their existence in the state. But the election results have shown that the Congress-led front is going to face a major poll debacle like the 2016 assembly polls.
LDF marched towards victory posing a threat to the survival of UDF which failed to obtain power in the centre and in Kerala.
It is observed that the difference of opinion and complaints within UDF will trigger a commotion soon. Both state and national leadership will be questioned on the poor performance.
With the setback in the polls, the front will struggle to prevent erosion of followers.
Congress, the major political party in UDF, faced a great fallout in Kerala. Though the front collapsed similar to the 2016 polls, the Muslim League was successful to retain power in their seats.
UDF used Sabarimala issue and presence of Rahul Gandhi as major weapons in the election campaign. But the voters of Kerala dismissed all these elements and decided to go for another term of LDF government.
Though UDF was succuessful to make Sabarimala issue a topic of discussion during the election, they failed to woo voters out of it.
Gold Smuggling case was also a major weapon of UDF against the LDF government. Even after Chief Minister’s office faced allegations over the case, UDF failed to turn the voters against the CPM-led LDF.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala was successful to bring some serious allegations against the LDF government. But the opposition and Chennithala failed to reach out to the public and influence them.
The poll debacle in Kerala will also question the Congress national leadership as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi took part in the election campaigns in the state.
If UDF retained power in Kerala, it would have favoured Congress in national politics.Rahul Gandhi visited many constituencies to woo the voters with the confidence of winning Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. But even his presence didn’t influence the voters to withdraw support to Pinarayi Vijayan and LDF.
