Thiruvananthapuram: Aadhaar card will be made mandatory to obtain driving licence and registration certificate of the vehicle across the country. The central government has brought this amendment as part of ensuring safety in online services.

The move will check the registration of vehicle on benami names and obtaining driving licence by producing fake documents.

At present, photo affixed approved ID cards should be submitted while applying for driving licence and RC.

The union ministry of road transport and highways has sought the opinion of state governments and the public for implementing the amendment.

According to reports, the union ministry will issue a notification regarding this by the end of February.

Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology proposed the centre to make Aadhaar mandatory in matters related to the motor vehicle department after examining serious security lapses.

In the initial phase, Aadhaar will be made mandatory for learner’s licence, licence renewal, duplicate driving licence, changing of address and international driving permit.

The procedures to transfer vehicle ownership are completely carried out online. An OTP will be sent to the mobile phone number of the vehicle owner to confirm the safe transfer. But there are chances of irregularities in this procedure.

Aadhaar details will be shared between Vahan and Sarathi websites which is used for vehicle registration and driving licence.
