Kochi: As the counting of LSG polls is on progress, no party has gained absolute majority in Kochi corporation. But as the single largest party, LDF is likely to gain power in Kochi corporation.
LDF candidates are leading in 34 seats while UDF is leading in 31 and NDA in 5. Meanwhile, 4 independent candidates also won the polls. Among the independent candidates, two are Muslim League rebels and one each UDF and LDF rebels.
At least 38 seats should be obtained to get absolute majority in the corporation. The latest trends show that UDF which is ruling the corporation will lose power this polls.
As a neck and neck fight is being witnessed, the decision of rebel candidates will be crucial in the corporation.
UDF mayor candidate N Venugopal lost to his BJP rival by one vote. Meanwhile, UDF has won Kochi Kaloor south seat.
As UDF and LDF candidates ended up with a tie in this seat, the officials declared UDF candidate as winner after drawing lots.
UDF has been ruling the corporation for the last 10 years. Before UDF’s entry, LDF ruled Kochi corporation for 30 years.
LDF was hopeful to regain power in Kochi corporation this time too. But in the present circumstances, the decision of rebel candidates will determine whether UDF or LDF will gain power in Kochi corporation.
