Kochi: The Enforcement Directorate has opposed the bail plea of M Sivasankar at the court here. The IAS official was arrested over money laundering charges related to gold smuggling case.

ED has submitted an affidavit before the court opposing Sivasankar’s bail plea on Wednesday.

In the affidavit, ED pointed out Sivasankar’s influence on higher officials and evidence obtained against him in the case.

M Sivasankar is one of the senior IAS officials in the state. Hence, if he is released on bail, he will try to influence and intervene in probe. So, bail should not be granted to him, ED requested the court.

While considering the bail plea, the court will examine whether granting bail to the accused will interrupt the probe and whether he will be available for trial into the case.

Additional solicitor general Suryaprakash Rao from Delhi is appearing in the court via Google Meet to oppose the bail plea. Noted lawyer B Raman Pillai is appearing for Sivasankar.

The hearing is ongoing at the court.
