Kavalappara landslide: People hesitated to move to camps even after warning; ended up in mishap
Nilambur: When the people of Kavalappara here hesitated to move to the relief camps after a warning was issued, it ended up in a huge disaster. They were confident that their area will not be affected as it was safe during last time.
All people in the 36 houses trapped in the landslide were staying in the camps in Bhoodanam LP School last year at this time. They stayed in camps for 15 days. They were evacuated following landslide alert. But nothing happened then.
Unfortunately, their confidence that the land will be safe in any flood finally took their lives. Vijayan who had a narrow escape from the landslide in Kavalappara revealed the incident to 24 News channel.
“People were warned that the water has a smell at the same time in August last year, and were asked to move from the place. But nothing happened then. People were staying in relief camp at the school for 15 days. Those evacuated people are affected this time,” Vijayan said.
The major landslide in Kavalappara occurred on Thursday night at 8.30. A hill collapsed and over 100-acre land was trapped under soil here. All the families who were staying there were trapped in the mishap.
Even two-storeyed houses are completely under soil. An area in 1 km cannot be seen above the debris. The path leading to the place is completely blocked due to trees falling and mud slip.
