Thiruvananthapuram: Higher Education Minister R Bindu has reacted to the criticism over attending the wedding of Karuvannur bank fraud accused's daughter. The minister revealed that she attended the wedding as the groom's mother Latha Chandran is her long-time friend.

Eyebrows have been raised after the pictures of R Bindhu attending the wedding ceremony of the daughter of an accused, who is on the run, surfaced on Monday.

She attended the wedding of the daughter of Ambili Mahesh, one of the three accused in the Karuvannur bank fraud case.

"I can't avoid attending the marriage as the mother of the bride is booked in a case," the minister told the media here on Tuesday. She also requested the media to be ethical in this matter.
Ambili Mahesh was a member of the board of directors of Karuvannur Co-operative Bank. As per reports, Ambili Mahesh is absconding from the police. On the other day, the crime branch arrested Kiran, a key accused in the case. Earlier, the bank secretary and the president were arrested in connection with the scam.

The wedding ceremony that was attended by Bindhu, who is also the wife of acting CPM state secretary A.Vijayaraghavan, was held in the last week of October at her constituency in Irinjalkuda. The minister landed in a controversy after the pictures of Bindhu having food with the new couple, surfaced on Monday.

The party leadership in her constituency said the Minister was invited by the groom, whose family has been close with the minister's family for long, and 'nothing else needs to be dwelled into'.
Incidentally at the height of the protests by the opposition, it was also alleged that a portion of the swindled funds was used in the election campaign of Bindu.

The fraud turned serious when a 64-year-old depositor committed suicide after he received a foreclosure notice for recovering amounts that he never borrowed and it was then things turned murkier. The protests became louder which led to the arrest of a few employees and the board members.
