Karipur flight crash: Heavy rain blocked pilot's view, say reports

The aircraft could not be controlled as it was a table top runway. This resulted in the crash.

Karipur: The Air India flight skidded off the runway at Karipur airport due to heavy rain, it is learnt. According to reports, there was heavy rainfall at the place when the mishap took place.

The Air India 1344 Dubai-Kozhikode flight took off from Dubai at 4.45 pm and reached Karipur by 7.45 pm. When it was trying to land, the aircraft skidded from the runway. As the pilot tried to take off again, it skidded and fell down. The aircraft could not be controlled as it was a table top runway. This resulted in the crash.

The front portion of the flight was damaged completely under the impact of the crash. The aircraft split into two near the portion from the cockpit to the front door. The passengers in the business class who were placed just behind the cockpit were severely injured. They were shifted to various hospitals in Kozhikode and Malappuram. It is reported that the flight fell off the table top runway to a depth of 35 feet.

The Air India Express flight as part of Vande Bharat Mission skidded off the runway and fell down to the Melangadi Crossbelt road area on Kondotty-Kunnumpuram road. Captain Deepak Vasanth Sathe and Captain Akhilesh were flying the aircraft. Among them, Deepak Sathe was killed in the crash. A total of 174 passengers and six cabin crew were in the flight. As per reports, ten children also are among the passengers.
