The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs department jointly busted a contraband operation.

Karipur: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department jointly busted a contraband operation at the Kozhikode International Airport. Four passengers were trying to smuggle 4.1 kilograms of gold, worth Rs 1.94 crore.

A Malappuram Vengara native hid 999 grams of gold worth Rs 47 lakhs inside an emergency lamp. He arrived from Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight.

An Indigo Airlines passenger hailing from Thalakkad in Malappuram, who arrived from Jeddah, hid 1.2 kilogram gold in a transformer of a woofer.

A Thalasseri native who arrived from Dubai was nabbed with 808 grams of gold hidden inside his body. Another person hailing from Malappuram was nabbed with Rs 56 lakh worth gold hidden inside woofer.

The operation was led by Customs Deputy Commissioner T A Kiran.
